Individual sessions are generally one hour long, and begin with an intake and assessment. Based on the assessment, we will use specific hands-on and/or movement practices that are the most helpful for your particular situation, and that are tailored to your unique goals, abilities, and lifestyle.
You may experience hands-on work to assist with injury recovery, help release tight muscles and fascia, and/or direct awareness to areas of tension. You may be guided through postures and stretches to access and release physical tensions. You’ll learn mindful breathing techniques to calm and alternately energize. Guided meditation and relaxation exercises are often integrated into sessions to help balance the body-mind connection.
A home-practice is critical to the effectiveness of Yoga Therapy as an intervention, so you will leave with a prescription for what to do on your own. In follow-on sessions we will modify and refine the practices as your situation and/or medical condition change. I offer suggestions, adjustments, and modifications so that you can practice on your own safely and effectively.
Whether you’ve had an accident, or are dealing with repetitive postural imbalances (like sitting at a desk all day!), movement is key to unlocking those tight tissues. Yoga Therapy uses postures and stretches to rehabilitate injuries, manage pain, regain range of motion, and increase strength, balance, and flexibility.
Every experience we ever have is stored in the body. Our physical body often reflects our internal state. So emotions like fear, anger, and anxiety are not only states of mind, they are also conditions of the muscular, nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Yoga Therapy uses integrative practices like breathing and meditation to bring awareness to how we embody our emotions. This allows us to shift from unconscious reactions to considered responses to life’s traumas and challenges.
Yoga philosophy is rooted in the belief that we are all expressions of a divine flow of energy. And sometimes that flow gets blocked due to life experiences. Yoga Therapy uses movement (postures/stretches), breathing (pranayama), and relaxation strategies (meditation) to unblock this vital energy. In turn we gain the emotional resilience to handle stress in a more effective way.
